Ubisoft’s pirate adventure open beta leaves players with mixed feelings.
As Ubisoft’s “Skull and Bones” prepares to set sail, the open beta offers a taste of what players can expect. However, initial impressions are mixed.
A Rough Start on the High Seas
Ubisoft’s latest endeavor, “Skull and Bones,” is nearing release in its crucial beta phase. This final testing round was supposed to convince players that the long-awaited pirate game delivers on its promises and is worth the $60 price tag. However, after spending some hours on the virtual seas, opinions are divided.
The Ubisoft Formula: Blessing or Curse?
Like many Ubisoft games, “Skull and Bones” starts with a tutorial phase aimed at familiarizing players with the mechanics. Yet, the initial steps raise questions about whether the usual mechanics can capture the spirit of a true pirate adventure.
Naval Combat: A Glimmer of Hope
Despite a rocky start, the game shines in naval battles. Dynamic fights against NPC merchants and the hunt for treasures provide an exciting gaming experience, albeit not entirely meeting expectations for a historical ship simulation. The ease of getting into firing range and landing shots, along with an artificial crew stamina, give the game a less strategic and more action-oriented character.
A World Without Anchors
The atmosphere of “Skull and Bones” fluctuates between attempting to be dark and realistic. Particularly, the animations sometimes feel out of place, undermining the potential for a deep pirate experience.
Stronger Together?
The hope that cooperation with other players and forming mini-fleets could enrich the gaming experience was not fulfilled for many players either. Player interactions remain superficial, and PvP elements seem underdeveloped. However, there’s hope that the endgame with its PvPvE elements, trade routes, and larger ships will bring the promised depth and excitement.
While “Skull and Bones” can be entertaining at its best moments, the beta overall paints a mixed picture. The longing for the carefree and profound adventures of “Sea of Thieves” remains unfulfilled. Whether Ubisoft can adjust the course by the time of release remains to be seen. One thing is certain: The pirate heart is still searching for its true home on the digital seas.
