Historic Strike Leads to Significant Gains

The contract approval comes after a historic 118-day strike, the longest in SAG-AFTRA’s history, which began on July 14 and ended on November 9. The strike was a pivotal moment for the union, granting the TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee the leverage needed to secure substantial gains. The new contract includes over $1 billion in new compensation and benefit plan funding, reflecting the union’s commitment to ensuring fair pay and benefits for its members.

Advancements in Compensation and AI Protections

One of the key features of the new contract is a revamped compensation model for entertainers working on streaming platforms, allowing them to earn significant bonuses in addition to existing residuals structures. The agreement also addresses the evolving landscape of AI technology, introducing structured rules around consent and compensation guardrails for its use. These advancements acknowledge the changing nature of the entertainment industry and the need to adapt to new technologies.

Enhanced Protections and Equity

The contract also includes meaningful protections for the casting process and introduces new measures for sexual harassment prevention. Additionally, it addresses hair and makeup equity, ensuring fair treatment and representation for all members. These provisions demonstrate the union’s dedication to creating a safer, more equitable work environment for its members.

A Stronger, More United Union

The ratification of the contract, effective retroactively from November 9, 2023, to June 30, 2026, marks a new era of strength and unity for SAG-AFTRA. As stated by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, this is a golden age for the union, which has never been more powerful. The overwhelming support for the contract reflects the members’ commitment to advocacy and their desire to lay the groundwork for a better industry.

The approval of the new SAG-AFTRA contract represents a significant victory for the union and its members. It not only addresses key issues like compensation, AI technology, and harassment protections but also strengthens the union’s position in the entertainment industry. As the industry continues to evolve, this contract sets a precedent for future negotiations, ensuring that the rights and interests of SAG-AFTRA members are protected and advanced.
