Intense Snowfall and Shifting Lake Bands
The lake effect snow is expected to be particularly heavy, with a lake band centered on Ski Country this afternoon. It will slowly shift north through southern Erie and Wyoming counties tonight, reaching the Buffalo Metro area by early Wednesday morning. The lake band will remain there through the first half of Wednesday night before shifting back south of Buffalo later Wednesday night into Thursday morning. It will then move back north across the Buffalo Metro area Thursday afternoon and weaken.
Travel Disruptions and Safety Concerns
The heavy snowfall, combined with winds gusting as high as 40 mph, will result in areas of blowing and drifting snow, mainly on Wednesday afternoon and evening. These conditions are expected to make travel very difficult to impossible, potentially impacting both morning and evening commutes. Residents are advised to exercise caution and prepare for hazardous travel conditions.
Extreme Cold and Health Risks
In addition to the heavy snow, the region will experience icy wind chills as low as 20 below zero on Wednesday night. Such conditions could result in hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to dress warmly and limit exposure to the cold to prevent health risks associated with these frigid temperatures.
Preparing for the Snowstorm
With heavy snow falling in relatively narrow bands, rapid changes in road conditions and visibility are expected. Those planning to travel should be prepared for challenging conditions and stay informed about the latest weather updates. The community is encouraged to take necessary precautions, including stocking up on essentials and ensuring that heating systems are functioning properly.
The lake effect snow warning issued for Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming counties highlights the need for preparedness and caution during severe winter weather conditions. Residents and travelers in the affected areas should stay informed and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being during this challenging period.
