New Settings and Villains

The film begins with an exciting confrontation between Gru and the new villain Maxime Le Mal, voiced by Will Ferrell. Their history dates back to their school days at Lycee Pas Bon, an elite academy for aspiring villains. During a class reunion, Gru arrests Maxime, but he soon escapes and vows revenge. This prompts the Anti-Villain League to relocate the Gru family to the suburbs of Mayflower.

Life in the Suburbs

In Mayflower, Gru, Lucy, and their children adopt new identities. Gru swaps his dark clothes for polo shirts and khakis, becoming a part-time solar salesman and stay-at-home dad. Lucy works as a beautician, while the children adjust to new schools and activities. These changes lead to humorous moments, especially as Gru tries to fit into the superficial suburban community.

Strong Voices and New Adventures

Steve Carell and Joey King lead a strong voice cast. Carell maintains Gru’s signature irritability while navigating the new challenge of raising a baby. The relationship with his son, Gru Jr., who rejects his paternal affection, becomes a central theme. Besides family challenges, Gru also deals with the subtle cruelties of suburban life, particularly with his snobbish neighbor Perry, voiced by Stephen Colbert.

Minions in Action

The Minions, Gru’s yellow helpers, provide plenty of laughs. Recruited by the Anti-Villain League as top agents, they undergo intense training to become Super Minions. These sequences offer visually impressive and humorous moments, grounding the film and ensuring entertainment. The detailed animation of the Minions continues the traditional comedy of Illumination Studios.

“Despicable Me 4” blends familiar and new elements to offer an entertaining film experience. With a runtime of 95 minutes, the film delivers laughs, action, and heartwarming moments without overwhelming the story. Fans of the series will be delighted by the new adventures and beloved characters.
