Q: Your story is motivational, Tora. Could you explain how it started?

Tora Drums: In 2017, as I was graduating from high school, I fell in love with drumming. There weren’t many musicians in my birthplace of Hanoi, therefore I didn’t grow up in a particularly musical atmosphere. However, I was drawn to music for some reason, and it came naturally to me when I learned how to play the drums. I was immediately captivated. As a result of my consistent practice, drumming became my medium of expression.

Q: As a drummer, what difficulties have you encountered, particularly coming from an area where music was not commonly practiced?

Tora Drums: Yes, there have been a lot of difficulties! The music scene in Hanoi was little while I was growing up, and there weren’t many possibilities to play or learn. I also have to establish myself further because it’s a male-dominated sector. However, I’ve always maintained my concentration on honing my trade because I think hard work is important. Another major source of encouragement for me to keep going has been the support I’ve gotten online.

Q: What distinguishes you as a drummer, in your opinion?

Tora Drums: I believe it requires both technical proficiency and originality. I’m constantly trying out new styles and genres. I want my drumming to make an impression, whether it’s a jazz composition, a rock hymn, or something completely original. For me, stage presence and confidence are also crucial. Whether I’m performing live or in a video, I always aim to engage the audience.

Q: To date, you have released five songs, including instrumentals. Could you describe your creative process to us?

Tora Drums: Feeling and experimenting are key components of my creative process. I usually develop from a beat that I can’t get out of my head. It changes into something lively and vivacious at moments and more lyrical and sentimental at others. Every song is an expression of what I’m going through right now. I also enjoy creating original music by fusing contemporary beats with traditional drumming methods.

Q: There are more than 87,000 subscribers to your Tora Drums YouTube account. What does that platform mean for you?

Tora Drums: Everything is on my YouTube channel! I can express my ideas there and make connections with drumming fans worldwide. I share original songs, drum covers, and occasionally even behind-the-scenes videos. Knowing that my work inspires and is valued by others is incredible. I’m inspired to make more videos because some of my most well-liked ones have received so much affection.

Q: What aspect of your experience has been the most fulfilling thus far?

Tora Drums: Without a doubt, the bond I’ve established with my viewers. It is wonderful to know that my music speaks to others. I really treasure the work I’ve done with other artists; coming up with something fresh with them is always interesting.

Q: You stated that you aspired to be among the world’s best drummers. What makes you dream?

Tora Drums: Though it’s a lofty goal, why not strive high? Drummers who have revolutionized what drumming can be, such as Chris Coleman, Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Joey Jordison, and Senri Kawaguchi,  inspire me. I want to maintain my style while achieving that degree of proficiency and notoriety. Being the best isn’t the only goal; it’s also about encouraging others, particularly young women, to believe in their potential.

Q: What will happen to Tora Drums next? Have you got any great plans?

Tora Drums: I’ve got a lot planned! I’m excited to play live at new places and am working on more unique music. Additionally, I would like to work with sponsor brands who share my goal. In addition, I want to encourage other young drummers, particularly women, to follow their aspirations.

Q: How do you deal with the difficulties of a male-dominated industry as a female drummer?

Tora Drums: It’s certainly not simple. People frequently undervalue or doubt your skills. However, I’ve come to let my drumming speak for itself. I concentrate on honing my art and remaining true to myself. Additionally, I believe that representation is important; I’m doing something right if I can demonstrate to other young women that it is feasible.

Q: Which project or performance is your favorite to date?

Tora Drums: It’s a difficult one! Although each project has been unique in its own way, I think my very first live performance stands out. It was amazing to sense the excitement of the crowd and see how they related to my music. It brought back memories of my first motivation for learning to drum.

Q: Your energetic and imaginative performances are well-known. How do you approach various types and genres?

Tora Drums: I enjoy discovering new genres! Every style has its own beat and feel, and I try to fit in while including my unique flair. Regardless of the genre—rock, jazz, or instrumental—I want my drumming to be distinctive and elevate the song. It all comes down to striking a balance between expressive feeling and technical accuracy.

Q: Which artist would you work with if you could?

Tora Drums: I would love to collaborate with so many incredible artists, but if I had to choose, I would choose Anderson Paak or John Mayer. Their song has such a powerful beat, and I believe we could work together to make something truly unique.

Q: Finally, how can fans keep up with your work and track your journey?

Tora Drums: Fans can follow me on Instagram and YouTube. I frequently share content regarding my projects, music, and live performances. Please feel free to message me or leave a comment; I love hearing from my followers!
